Digestive Disorders

Treatable Digestive Conditions

Digestive Disorder
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

The standard medical approach treats digestive disorders with drugs: proton pump inhibitors for GERD, laxatives for constipation, anti-spasmodics for IBS.  Instead I look for the underlying dysfunction that causes your various symptoms and conditions and try to correct that.

Treatment begins with tests to determine what causes your problem:

  • Allergy testing
  • Gluten testing
  • Elimination/challenge diet
  • Stool or urine (organic acid) testing (for yeast overgrowth, parasites, gut imbalance)

My general approach to all intestinal problems is known as 4R: Remove, Replace, Re-inoculate, Repair

Remove sugar, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, foods you are allergic to or have trouble digesting, and toxins such as food additives and pesticides.

Replace substances needed for proper digestion using supplements such as betaine HCl or digestive enzymes.

Re-inoculate the digestive tract using foods and supplements that restore balance to the microorganisms in the gut.

Repair the lining of the gut with nutrients that may be in short supply such as zinc, glutamine, fish oil, and anti-oxidants.

Calming the Gut via the Gut-Brain Connection

Digestive Disorder

There are so many nerves in the gut that it is often called the “second brain” or the “gut brain.” Many doctors simply dismiss complaints of gas, bloating, or abdominal discomfort as “all in your head,” but the truth is you can learn to control these symptoms using specialized relaxation, breathing, and visualization techniques.
