Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes and Obesity Treatments

Diabetes

Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a very serious condition that affects your entire well-being, both physical and mental. I assess all patients to see if they might be on a path toward diabetes. Whether you are already diabetic or just trending in that direction, I educate you about proper diet and lifestyle changes. I use nutritional supplements both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside diabetic medications such as Metformin.

As with all conditions, I take a holistic approach, since conditions such as allergies, mood swings, insomnia, and poor intestinal health also affect blood sugar.

Treatments
Diet - You will learn how to eat and what to eat.

Lifestyle changes - I will advise you regarding exercise, sleep, and stress reduction, including relaxation techniques such as coherence breathing, a method that slows down the breath in order to calm your nervous system, and visualization.

Supplementation - I will recommend herbs and nutritional supplements to reduce blood sugar, improve insulin sensitivity, and prevent and treat diabetic complications.

When using medications such as Metformin, I bear in mind the deficiencies the medications create and replace the required nutrients.

I also use prebiotics and probiotics to balance the micro-organisms that inhabit your gut. Studies show that balancing the gut flora promotes blood sugar balance and healthy weight and metabolism.

Correcting problems such as yeast and bacterial overgrowth can also improve blood sugar balance.

Obesity and Weight Loss

Obesity in both adults and children is a serious problem in this country. Being overweight affects every aspect of your health, from hormonal balance to cardiovascular and immune function. Weight loss reduces inflammation, enhances self-esteem, and improves your overall well-being.

My functional approach to overweight examines a wide range of factors that may be making it difficult for you to lose weight. I then treat the root causes that I find.

Treatment
I look not just at simple measurements like height, weight, and waist/hip ratio, but also at your body composition, using a bioimpedance analyzer to measure fat mass and lean body mass.

Many factors can be making you fat, so I test for these root causes.

  • Improper diet. I look at what you eat, how you eat, and when you eat, including the proper balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates for you.
  • Metabolic and hormonal factors. I look at adrenal, thyroid, and metabolic issues.
  • Allergies. Food allergies can underlie an inability to lose weight.
  • Imbalanced gut flora. I do stool and urine testing and correct imbalanced intestinal flora with prebiotics, probiotics, and, if indicated, herbal and prescription antifungals and antimicrobials.

I also use the results of my testing to determine the most appropriate exercise program for you.
